James P. Smerdon, D.M.D.
James P. Smerdon grew up in Truckee, California and received his degrees from the University of Nevada and the University of Louisville School of Dentistry where he graduated in 2003. Dr. Smerdon stays current with new technology and evolving dental care through continuing education courses, including a mini residency for implant dentistry and implant retained dentures. Dr. Smerdon believes that through patient education and prevention of dental decay his patients have confident, beautiful smiles.
Dr. Smerdon is an active member of the American Dental Association, Northern Nevada Dental Society, Sierra Nevada Study Club, and serves a Peer Review Mediator for the Northern Nevada Dental Society. Dr. Smerdon is married and the father of two children. He enjoys fishing, skiing, remodeling projects, cooking and bike riding with his family and friends.
Derek L. Johnson, D.M.D.
Derek L. Johnson was born and raised in Fallon. He graduated from Churchill County High School in 2001 as valedictorian of his class. After serving a 2 year mission for his church he graduated with honors from the University of Nevada in 2007 with a degree in Biology. Dr. Johnson received his dental degree from UNLV’s School of Dental Medicine in 2011.
Dr. Johnson loves being a dentist and practicing in the town he grew up in. He believes that through patient education and attention to detail, his patients can expect a healthy beautiful smile. Dr. Johnson is married to Tristin, also a native of Fallon, and they are the proud parents of three children. He loves spending time with his family, whether it be coaching them in youth sports, going on family trips, or going to the movies.

Blaine A. Austin, D.D.S.
Blaine A. Austin received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from the University of Utah in 1974. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Washington in 1982. In 1985 Dr. Austin completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency from the University of Connecticut Medical School. Dr. Austin’s background in dental surgery has given him a perspective not just on teeth but on overall oral and dental health, including gums, soft tissue, disorders of the mouth (like gingivitis), etc. Dr. Blaine Austin has long been reputed as one of the best oral surgeons in Ogden, UT and the premier TMJ surgeon in the Country. His concern for the creation of products that will combat these and other oral issues is astounding.
Dr. Austin manages a wide variety of problems relating to the Mouth, Teeth, and Facial Regions. He practices the full scope of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with expertise ranging from Corrective Jaw Surgery to Wisdom Tooth Removal. Dr. Austin also diagnoses and treats Oral Pathology, Facial Trauma, TMJ Disorders, and performs a full range of Dental Implant procedures. Dr. Austin is married and the father of 5 children and spends his time outside the office traveling and enjoying his family.
Rodney A. Gray, D.D.S., M.S.
Rodney A. Gray has been practicing endodontics for 39 years, 33 of them in the Reno area. Dr. Gray received his dental and endodontic degrees from the University of Iowa. Dr. Gray is excited to join the team at The Dentists’ Office in Fallon an offer specialty care in endodontics, including root canal therapy, re-treatment of existing failing root canals, and endodontic surgery. Dr. Gray is married and the father of three. He enjoys traveling, golfing, as well as singing in his church chorus.
Daniel K. Walton D.D.S., M.S.
Daniel K. Walton was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada, but moved to the States to attend college at Brigham Young University. After graduating with honors from BYU's School of Business, Dr. Walton attended dental school at the University of California, San Francisco where he was awarded the Regent Scholarship, the highest recognition awarded to entering dental students. Dr. Walton completed his orthodontic specialty training with a three-year residency at The Ohio State University, earning a Master of Science in Orthodontics. He has been practicing orthodontics in Northern Nevada for the last ten years.

I became interested in orthodontics at a young age because I loved how science and art were used together to create beautiful smiles and provide a lifelong service to patients. It's great being able to interact with my patients every day. I love seeing the positive changes that take place and the confidence they gain as I help create the smile they've always wanted."
Family is the most important part of Dr. Walton's life and a great source of happiness. Dr. Walton is happily married to Sarah, and is the father of four children. In his spare time, Dr. Walton enjoys photography, videography, playing the piano and guitar, and looks for any opportunity to be outdoors in the mountains or at the lake.
Brandon R. Lloyd, D.D.S., M.S.
Dr. Brandon R. Lloyd earned his bachelor’s degree from Utah State. After graduation he moved to the Midwest where he completed his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degree at The Ohio State University. He then worked for several years in oral surgery and general dentistry before specializing in orthodontics. His residency training and Master’s thesis were completed at the highly regarded orthodontic program at Ohio State.
He has successfully passed both written and clinical components of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) examination which makes him one of the few board-certified orthodontists in Northern Nevada. He has also conducted and published research in the fields of oral cancer and craniofacial stem cells. He has presented findings on these subjects to national and international audiences.
Emily Whipple, D.M.D.
Dr. Emily Whipple is a third generation Nevadan. She loves having the opportunity to improve oral health care for kids and provide a positive experience. She grew up in Boulder City and attended college at the University of Nevada, Reno. After only three years at UNR, she was accepted into dental school at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and graduated in 2008. Dr. Whipple practiced in Northern Nevada for five years and realized her love of pediatrics, which prompted her to return to UNLV to complete a two-year residency in Pediatric Dentistry. During residency, she also completed training with Nevada LEND to become a better provider for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.
Dr. Whipple became a new mom in 2016, to her son Fredrick (Freddie). She loves spending time with her family, traveling, and keeping up with popular kid topics so that she can better relate to her
patients. In her free time, she enjoys sewing, swimming and playing with her two dogs.
Nicole Bui-Fong, D.D.S.
Nicole Bui-Fong was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended the University of California, San Diego for undergraduate education. After college, Dr. Bui-Fong interned at the office of her childhood pediatric dentist and fell in love with working with children. Dr. Bui-Fong obtained her DDS degree at UCLA and completed the Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry Program at the University of Southern California (USC) and Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA). During training at CHLA, Dr. Bui-Fong worked exclusively treating children with medically and behaviorally complex issues. Because of this, she has a particular passion in treating special needs children.
"The thing I love most about pediatric dentistry is that it is never boring! Because kids are so honest and unpredictable, each day of work is fun, different, and refreshing. Just as each child is unique, every family is unique as well. I take pride in getting to know my patients and their families so that I can deliver a personalized approach to dental care that meets each family’s individual needs."
Dr. Bui-Fong is new to the Reno area, but her husband has lived in Reno for the past 7 years. In her spare time, Dr. Bui-Fong loves to try new restaurants and travel to visit friends and family. California born-and-bred, so Dr. Bui-Fong and her husband like to keep warm during the winter; once the sun is out, their favorite thing to do is to visit Lake Tahoe.
A member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and an Albert Schweitzer Fellow for Life, Dr. Bui-Fong is currently pursuing a board certification in pediatric dentistry.
Fun fact: Bui is pronounced Boo-EE, like a buoy that floats in the water!
